Summer Reading 4

Out of all of the choices on the list I chose Jasper Jones. I thought that it was one of the best books out of the whole list. After reading all of the book summaries Jasper Jones sounded the most interesting.  I also knew that Jasper Jones was going to be a Mystery  book and I thought that would very interesting. Out of all the other books I really focused on looking up Jasper Jones because of it's unique title. It really made me wonder what the book could be about. After reading the back of the book I found out that the book was going to take place in a small town in Australia. I thought that would be really cool because I knew Jasper Jones was about teenagers and I thought it would be cool to learn about what goes on over in Australia and what kind of things they have in common with us teenagers jn The United States of America. Through out the book I did link some connections with me and some of the characters. For examaple Charile's best friend Jeffrry Lu loves to play cricket. This is similar to me becuase i love to play baseball and the two sports are kind of similar. 

Summer Reading #3

"I trust him. I have to. I've come too far. If he were to leave me here and now, I'd never make it back. I can't hear the river anymore,  and the canopy overhead has stolen the moonlight. As we press further, I'm finding it harder to imagine what kind of help Jasper needs. I don't understand what's particular unique skill I bring to the table. It's a strange coalition, me and Jasper Jones. We've never really even spoken before. I'm surprised he knew my name, let alone where I lived. He's rarely at school, just long enough to qualify for football. I've only ever caught glimpses of him from a distance, so I can't help but thrill in this sense of inclusion," (Silvey,8). In this part of the book the rebel of the town Jasper Jones, who is known to be up to no good, knocks on the window of Charlie Bucktin late at night. Charlie and Jasper have never spoke to each other do not know each other well. In fact, they are complete opposites. Charlie is a golden boy who has done no wrong and Jasper is the town thief. What makes this passage hooking is because Jasper wants Charlie to sneak out late and night and help him. He will not say where and why which leaves the reader wondering and makes the reader urge to read ahead  and find out.

Summer Reading #2

In my book Jasper Jones Jasper wants to hide the body of Laura Wishart so that he won't be suspected as the murderer. Charlie wants to report the murder to the police department. Charlie later agrees to hide the body in a dam and he quickly wants to get home before his parents wake. He can't get home through the woods without Jasper's navigational skills through the woods and Jasper just wants to drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes before be takes Charlie to his home.  Charlie is feeling really guilty about what he has done and wants to come forward to the police. Jasper wants to keep the death of Laura Wishart a secret between them and no one else. A theme that I think is starting to develop is that you should tell the truth and be honest. I think this because the boys could get in alot of trouble if the police find out that they hid the body and that would make them look like the murderers and they could be put in jail. If the boys would have told the truth in the first place then I think they would not be in trouble other than the trouble Charlie would get in for sneaking out of his home in the middle of the night.

Summer Reading #1

In my book Jasper Jones so far there are two major characters. One of them is a boy named Jasper Jones. From what I can tell he has lived a very rough life. His mother is long gone and his father is a drunk that just doesn't care. He often lives in the woods and has to steal the essentials to survive. This makes the whole town hate him and they all think he is no good. The second character in the book is a young boy named Charlie Bucktin. He is thirteen years old, one year younger than Jasper. Charlie is avery intelligent boy and not much of an athlete. The setting this book takes place in is a small Australian mining town called Corrigan. The conflict is that some one murdered a young girl named Laura Wishart and hung her from a tree in the woods where Jasper lives.Jasper doesn't know what to do because the whole town will think that he killed her and seeks the help of Charlie in the middle of the night. My prediction is that Charlie will tell one of his friends about the girl and the police will get involved along with Charlies parents.

Dear Mr. Robertson,

       My name is Zack Ehling and I'm from Mason, Ohio, just about 30 minutes away from Cincinnati. The reason I am writing to you is becuase I just finished your Book Happy, Happy, Happy. I really enjoyed reading it and looked forward to reading it every time I had time to read. I really thought that your book was inspiring and was an all around good book. I liked how you opened up and shared your personal life stories about you and your family. It took a lot of courage to open up and admit that you were not always a Christian man. It was truly inspiring reading your book. Thank you.

Final Blogging Assessment in English 1B

The number one thing Phil Robertson stresses is that God is good and can do amazing things. Phil admits in the book that he was not always a holy man. In fact Phil admits that he did not find God untill he was 29 years old, and now he's "trying to make up for lost time"(Robertson 189). An example of something bad in the book is stealing. When Phil was a commercial fisherman(a person that catches fish for a living) people used to steal fish out of his nets.Why would people want to steal fish from Phil when they could catch them on their own?  Phil then chased them away with his shotgun, but it never seemed to work, they just kept coming back and stealing his fish. Later while reading the Bible Phil read Romans 12:17-21, where it says:" Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good." Phil then decided to do it God's way and when he caugh people stealing out of his nets he GAVE them fish for free. This shows that if you be nice to your enemies and "kill them with kindness," everything will be okay.

Which of these subjects and themes seem most important in the work

The most important theme in this book is that god is good. I would say that is the most important theme because Phil Robertson is ALL about religion. Phil used numerous examples of how God got him and his family through hardships and bad times, like poverty, and drug and  alcohol abuse. A line from the text to show the family's love for God is:" My boys might have strayed from Gods path for them at times, but they always had their faith to fall backon"(Robertson 188). This quote shows that the Robertson boys may have done unholy things in their lives, but Phil and God still forgave them and let them back in their home with open arms. As suprising as it may seem Phil and Kay's kids have not always been perfect. Phil explains in his book that they have all had alcohol problems, expecially Jep and Alan. The only one who did not drink was Jase, and he was always keeping his brothers in check.  

Characters...

One charcter that relates to Phil is obviously Si Robertson. Si is Phil's younger brother and also a star from Duck Dynasty. They both have the same personality and love to fish and hunt. Ond person that I think relates to Phi is Daryl Dixon. I think they relate because they are both "rednecks" and both hunt. In my eyes i see that Daryl is a younger version of Phil. Someone that I know in real life that relates to Kay, Phils wife is my Grandma. I think they relate because they both cook alot and act the same way from what i can see from Duck Dynasty. 

What real life issues are reflected in the text.

The main real life issue Phil Robertson talks about is not having enough money. He talks about this alot because he grew up not having alot. One thing Phil says about this problem is that even though they had no money they still loved each other and loved life. Another real life problem Phil talks about is the abuse of alcohol. Phil talks about this because in his earlier years he once had a problem with alcohol. Phil and Kay both say that when he was drunk he acted mean and out of controll. Kay said that one time while he was drunk Phil told Kay to take the kids and leave. Kay explains the constant struggle of while Phil was drunk. Some of those were not going to work, getting in fights, being mean and much much more.

This article is about Krista arguing that teachers and staff the schools should not be carrying guns.

 I think the line that is best written is: " It's unrealistic and, in fact, insulting to think people who entered the profession of education should be turned into teacher-law enforcement hybrids." The impact that this line has on the reader is that the line pursues the reader that Krista is truly correct and that teachers should not have to carry guns or have to use them because they are teachers, not police officers. I think that the diction in this line is informal and the sentence is long and involved.

I think Ramsey's writing style is journalistic, terse. A line to show her writing style is:" Here's an invitation to people who disagree with this misguided plan to attend the meeting and take a stand."

What have you learned

One thing that I have learned from this book is that Phil was 28 years old when he was first baptized. This suprises me because I would think of Phil as a person who ha always accepted God but really Phil didn't want god in his life until he was  28. Another thing I learned was that Phil's son Jeps real name is Jeptha not Jep. Another thing I learned was that Phil and Kay got married when Phil was 16 and Kay was 15. This was very suprising because now in our society no one gets married at that early of an age. Another thing I've learned is that Phil Robertson went to Louisiana Tech for college. Another thing I learned was that Kay Robertson (Phil's Wife) would never drink. I find this suprising because Phil was a huge drunk before, during and after college and I think it would be weird that Phil would want a wife that doesn't drink. I guess that shows that Phil and Kay have always loved each other through thick and thin.

The most important line from the chapter is

The most important line from chapter 5 is:" Everybody got drunk except for Kay, who wanted nothing to do with the tomfoolery,(Robertson, 67). This line is very important because it shows what kind of person Phil used to be. In the chapter it explains how Phil and Si used to be completely different men. They used to be drunks that did bad things and all they did was get drunk and go hunting and fishing. It shows that alcohol is really bad keeps you from being productive. Phil and Si used to be drunks but then later in life they found god and had a productive life. As some of you have noticed at the end of every Duck Dynasty show they always pray at the dinner table. This is because The Robertson's have found god and are now religious. This line is also important because it is proof that you can stop drinking and smoking and doing pills and other drugs. 

Explain why you chose the book you did.

In this blog post I am going to explain why I chose the book Happy,Happy,Happy by Phil Robertson. My first reason is that I think Phil is a very funny and unique person. I also wanted to know more about his early life and how he became rich and famous. Another reason I chose this book is because I like the show Duck Dynasty and since I like the show I thought I would really enjoy the book too. I also wanted to know more about the Duck Commander family and how the whole company started and how it became so successful and popular. I also had some things I was wondering about their family like why Willy is now in charge of Duck Commander. I was also wondering why Willy got to be in charge of the business instead of Phil's brother Si or a different brother like Jase or Jep or Al. Another reason I chose this book is because I have never read an autobiography or I can't remember reading one. I wanted to know what Phil thinks about common issues around the world like the government or what he thought about knew technology.

Happy, Happy, Happy by Phil Robertson

As many of you know Phil Robertson is the founder of a famous company called Duck Commander. He is also a star actor of the T.V. show Duck Dynasty. In this blog I am going to tell you about how Phil lived his life before he became famous. As a boy Phil was born and raised in Louisiana. Phil was never rich as a child, in fact their family was very poor. With four brothers and two sisters Phil's parents struggled to keep their family alive. Phil talks about how their family never had much money or food or nice clothes but they still managed to stay alive. Another thing that Phil stresses in his book is that even though his family had nothing and was dirt poor they all were happy and still loved each other.
